Taiwan Policy
Respondents evaluated pairs of hypothetical Taiwan-crisis scenarios described along five attributes — China’s action toward Taiwan, the US response, China’s action toward Japan, the US request to Japan, and the stance of the international community — and chose which scenario they would prefer Japan to address. Results are reported as marginal means (Pr(chosen) with 95% CIs).

Executive Summary
Japanese respondents show a clear preference for limited Japanese involvement in Taiwan contingencies. Scenarios in which the US requests only rear support from Japan are most preferred (Pr(chosen) = 0.55), while scenarios asking Japan to attack Chinese vessels are least preferred (0.47). International community consensus matters: scenarios where many countries are critical of China increase selection probability (0.54), while neutral international stances reduce it (0.47). China’s specific action toward Taiwan (invasion, blockade, or cyberattack) has relatively little effect on preferences, with marginal means clustered near 0.50.
